What Are Glucosamine & Chondroitin Sulfates?
    Arthritis t

    Arthritis Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin
Sulfate are the two supplements that form the basis of the joint care program
recommended by Dr. Jason Theodosakis, M.D., M.S., M.P.H. in his best selling
    book "The Arthritis Cure".

    What Is Arthritis/Osteoarthritis?
    Arthritis

    atoid Osteoarthritis (also called degenerative
arthritis) is the most common form of arthritis, affecting tens of millions
of Americans. Osteoarthritis develops in many different joints in the body,
but particularly in the knees, back, hips and fingers. Arthritis frequently
causes pain, inflammation and decreased range of motion. It tends to be progressive
and sometimes results in severe disability.
Many doctors view osteoarthritis as a
relentless and irreversible process of joint destruction. Typical treatment
protocols rely heavily on nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such
as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and piroxicam. These drugs may reve the symptoms,
but they do not slow the progression of Arthritis. On the contrary, there is
evidence that long-term use of NSAIDs damages the joints and accelerates the
progression of osteoarthritis. Furthermore, NSAIDs have a number of adverse
side effects, including peptic ulcers and damage to the liver or kidneys.

Arthritis and osteoarthritis afflicts countless millions of people worldwide,
including more than 50 million Americans. Arthritis
Arthritis Men are more likely to suffer from
arthritis and osteoarthritis than are women up to the age of 45, perhaps because
men tend to engage in more strenuous physical activities. From age 45 to 55,
however, men and women begin to suffer equally, while women are more likely
to be victims after the age of 55. Not only is osteoarthritis more frequent
in women age 55 or older, it is also more severe. Millions of women of all ages
have osteoarthritis and are affected twice as often as men.

    A New Approach for ArthritisA

      - AJoint cartilage contains protein molecules
called proteoglycans that make up what is known as the "ground substance"
of cartilage - the material that makes joints strong and gives them their
resince. Many researchers beve that joint cartilage is alive and that it is
capable of rebuilding itself. They beve that as old or damaged cartilage degenerates,
it is replaced by new, healthy cartilage. In various studies worldwide, it
has been shown that the treatment of osteoarthritis should focus on strategies
that both inhibit cartilage breakdown and promote cartilage repair. These
studies show that the combination of glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate
is capable of achieving both of these results.

      - Arthritis Thus, instead of simply dulling
the pain with drugs or performing expensive and potentially dangerous surgery,
many doctors in Europe and Asia (as well as a small but rapidly growing number
in the United States) are actually curing the symptoms of osteoarthritis.
They've had excellent results with approaches based on the natural supplements
glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate and have been slowing and eventually
eliminating the disease in many patients.

      -  Since they are substances we already consume and produce in very
small quantities in our bodies, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates have
no known significant side effects. This amazing fact stands in stark contrast
to painkillers such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatories and cortisone injections,
which can wreak havoc on the body.

      - Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates "jump-start" the production of these
key elements of the cartilage matrix, and then protect them. They can actually
help your body repair damaged or eroded cartilage. In other words, glucosamine
and chondroitin sulfates strengthen your body's natural repair mechanisms.
They can replace what your body fails to make.

    Glucosamine

Glucosamine stimulates the manufacture of collagen, which is the protein
portion of a fibrous substance that holds joints together. Collagen is also
the main component of the shock-absorbing cushion called articular cartilage
    - the white smooth surface which covers the ends of body joints in the fingers,
    wrists, knees, etc. Arthritis
Glucosamine helps bind water in the cartilage matrix. It has also been
shown to help produce more collagen and also normalizes cartilage metabolism,
which helps to keep the cartilage from breaking down. Glucosamine may actually
"jump-start" the production of the cartilage's key elements and may also protect
these same elements. Glucosamine may help the body repair eroded and damaged
    cartilage.

    Chondroitin Arthritis

Arthritis Chondroitin sulfates act like "liquid
magnets". It helps attract fluid into the proteoglycan molecules. This is important
for two reasons; the fluid sweeps nutrients into the cartilage and the fluid
acts as a spongy shock absorber.
Chondroitin may protect existing cartilage from a premature breakdown. It
does this by inhibiting certain enzymes that destroy cartilage and enzymes that
    prevent the transport of nutrients.
Chodroitin sulfates alone have been found to be effective for osteoarthritis
sufferers. Often just the glucosamine or chodroitin are used by themselves.
However they can work synergisticaaly when taken together to stimulate cartilage
production and to help control enzymes that destroy the cartilage. Using both
of these supplements can help the body heal itself. A glucosamine and chondroitin
sulfate combination is a powerful weapon against osteoarthritis.
